Of all the statistics we see, unemployment figures are particularly close to our hearts and are often the subject of debate. As this data is not immediately obvious, it is easily misinterpreted, but this does not mean that there is no single way to calculate it. So, how is the unemployment rate calculated?
Theunemployment rateis the ratio between the number of people looking for work and the total labor force. But be careful: the labor force is not the total population, but rather the sum of those in employment and those seeking work.
It is therefore necessary to distinguish between the unemployment rate and the employment rate: theemployment rateis the ratio between the number of people in employment and the total population.
So how many unemployed people are there in Italy? The numbers may be very different from what we think. The data is in fact affected by a very important factor: those who are not looking for work, who are not included in the calculation, which only takes into account those who are actively seeking employment. The data is potentially further altered: those who are engaged in some form of activity (part-time work, internships, apprenticeships, and similar activities) are not included in the unemployment figures.
Then there are those who escape all statistics: the so-called NEETs, whom we have been hearing about for a long time, i.e., those who are not in education, employment, or training and who have an impact on the calculation. If a person stops actively looking for work, they are removed from the statistics and the number of unemployed people decreases.
Ultimately, it is a complex calculation that does not take into account the quality of employment, but only traces a numerical profile and requires careful interpretation: being employed is not enough; we need to understand how, how much, and with what remuneration. The data are in fact 'static', i.e., they often describe phenomena by quantity rather than quality.
When we think about the data in these terms, the issue of employment becomes much more complex. This is why having the right tools to interpret reality becomes a fundamental method for implementing effective strategies.
